Merryn Trevethan

Merryn Trevethan is an Australian artist currently based in Singapore. She is intent on capturing and embodying personal experiences in globalised cities through her strikingly vibrant installations of speculative cityscapes. She holds a Masters of Fine Art (by research) from Monash University, AU (2005). Since relocating to Singapore in 2014, she has been commissioned to create many large-scale spatial interventions including for Facebook’s APAC HQ in Singapore, 2 Cavan Rd #twentytwenty project and various temporary public artworks for Singapore Arts Club. She works across a range of mediums from large-scale wall works, public art, and spatial interventions, to painting, drawing, small sculpture, and artists books. In all mediums, Trevethan exploits the interaction of color to create a spatial ambiguity that play on the uncertainty of perception. Her spatial interventions negotiate architectural features in found locations demarcating space with her trademark linear, polychromatic patterning. Her site-specific works encourage sensorial response to the phenomena of time and transition by interposing a riot of colour and light into the gloom of oft overlooked spaces. Her experiential and immersive spatial interventions beckon viewers to contemplate the entanglements faced with technological advancements and accessibility which places the world in a constant state of flux, flooded with information. In a sense, mapping the invisible networks that connect us, reminding us of the impact of technologies on our perception of color and our sense of space. In 2018, Trevethan was a resident artist at the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Residency Program in New York and at NPE Print Residency in Singapore. Other residencies include Point B Worklodge, New York (2011) and Red Gate International Artist Residency in Beijing China (2009).
